Capital Allocation Pattern Language and Allocator Archetypes

Hi friends!

As one of my first actions in the role of Research & Intel for Allo, I felt it was necessary to begin drafting a pattern language for capital allocation mechanisms as well as a set of allocator archetypes to help us develop a design language for new mechanisms. This work is based off of my previous efforts around a self-organization ontology for OpenCivics which is looking at the additional domains of:

  • Membership Thresholds
  • Membranes
  • Decision-making
  • Sense-making
  • Coordination & Collaboration
  • Learning & Knowledge Management
  • Culture

The basic thinking behind the purpose of this framework is to map the pain points of various allocators onto mechanism components so we can more easily spin up bespoke mechanisms for clients. Additionally, we want to position ourselves as category creators and thought leaders. This design philosophy and framework should support builders in designing better mechanisms by stacking different components as well as create a more well structured design space overall.

I’ll add the materials here in Google Doc form and welcome comments either over there or in this thread. Ideally, we have a generative dialogue as a community to lock in something we all feel we can get behind.
